about

Vicent Fibla started the spa.RK label in Barcelona, during 2001. “Lent” is the eighth release in total and the first full album on the label, after a series of mini cd albums and the latest 12’’ issues from Eedl and Zooey. In this time, the label has found an audience for its warm, emotive electronics and internationalist approach to its impressive roster. Gathering Mitchell Akiyama from Canada, Artificial Duck Flavour [Zorn] from Berlin, Si-Cut.db and Tennis from England, Phluidbox from Florida, Mikael Romanenko from Scotland under its welcoming umbrella, the label has proved itself fully this year with a series of brand new artists, more than capable of holding their own in the electronic forum. More than two years have passed since "Landscopes", Fibla's first album was released on the Sub Rosa/Quatermass label in 2000, whilst in 2002 Vicent produced The Congosound album, a more club and pop oriented project with video artist Carles Congost, issued on the spanish Cosmos label. These were interspersed with a series of guest appearances and collaborations: with Expanding on seven inch, on compilations for Worm Interface, Benbecula, Klangkrieg, Couchblip!, and remixes for Lisa Carbon, Stol and Marumari.

“lent” means literally "slow" in catalan, and should not be associated with fasting or any kind of religious observance! "Lent" finds Vicent in composed and fully assured form, employing trademark electronic elements, yet finding enough distinction to set it above and beyond the vast conveyor belt of the contemporary electronic scene. There's an unhurried, slow motion grace at the heart of this release, and it shows considerable amounts of heart and feeling at every turn. 'Krud' immediately settles into a sedate, majestic progression - booming bass and chords like ointment. 'Making the most of it' carries the feeling of impending time, building up from washes of sound and layer, emerging poised and smooth from a relatively crunched up beginning. 'La baie des anges' adopts a more architectural approach, perhaps more Autechre than Gaudi, but still, anyone who's visited the Sonar festival in Vicent's home town should understand the thrust and the context of this graceful piece. 'Boringly repetitive' takes the slanderous, almost journalistic term and fires it right back at the critics. Bumping along at an increased tempo, there's a defiant, joyous electronic hook which in the right hands could rock any party, worth the name. 'Antaix' brings us back to earth, crumpled but still nicely crisped around the edges, while 'Inside' enlists the assistance of DJ 2D2 on turntables, support dj on the latest Prefuse 73 tour. Summing up, we find the concluding track 'An incredible shared moment' and that could stand as fitting comment on the inclusive, sunblessed, shimmering web of sound that is 'Lent'. Just stick it on continuous play for a while and the feeling starts to build...

"Fibla's album delivers some winners. its sensibility is definitely 20th century, investing in solid tune-based arrangements over the all too frequent relentless avant-noise experimentation of 21st century electronica, but it's not afraid to delve into the depths of other subgenres too (glitch-hop anyone? see 'inside'). at times it can be derivative, but its effort to transform influences into its own aesthetic is rewarding, and the album is infinitely playable." (Absorb Mag)

"Fibla - Lent is exactly the album of that old electronic music. It sounds sweet for those who lack music which was created because it's form is lovely for the artist and not because it is "the best selling good at the time". We do value this sincerity, too. At this time Lent does not have as much analogue albums as it would have back in the 2000. Arovane. Phonem. Spark. Quench. Nautilis. Fibla has created a insanly quality album. You can feel how perfectly a bold and stable look is kept while listening to it. And at the same time it is not a "one note" album. It is obvious that this album is very mature and varying (this variety must be a result of long recording process of the album (2001-2003). Very beautiful." (10/10. Sutemos)
